What is therapy?

Therapy is the process of working with a therapist to understand problems causing emotional and psychological distress and work to resolve them by changing thoughts, behaviours and emotions. There are different types of therapies, including individual, couple and family.

Couple Therapy

Couple or marital therapy involves a couple working with a therapist to resolve conflicts and heal relationship wounds. The couple therapist will support the couple to change interactional patterns that are unhelpful and get in the way of deeper connections and stronger relationships. There may also be other reasons couples attend couple therapy, including whether to stay together or separate, and for couples who have decided to separate, to separate well. Separating well is particularly important when there are children involved to ensure children’s needs are considered and the impact of their parents’ separation is minimal on their development and well-being.

In addition to systemic therapy, I draw on the works of Drs. John and Julie Gottman, Imago Relationship Therapy, and research findings from the fields of neuroscience and trauma to help couples improve communication, have better conflict resolution skills and strengthen connection.
