Higher Self

Why 'Higher Self' Therapy and Consultancy

When we operate from our Higher Self, we are operating from a place of greater self-awareness and insight. When we do this, we are more open to possibilities and can see solutions to problems more easily. When we operate from a place of greater self-awareness in relationships, we bring the best of ourselves to our relationships, and in doing so create strong connections with the people in our lives.

About

Abeda Iqbal

I am an experienced senior couple and family therapist with undergraduate qualifications in Psychology and a Masters in Couple and Family Therapy.  I have worked with individuals, couples and families at different relationship stages and phases, presenting with a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Relationship distress (couple and family)
  • Parenting
  • Mental health (including depression and anxiety)
  • Grief and loss
  • Unresolved, ongoing conflict
  • Adolescent behavioural problems
  • Parenting after separation
  • Unresolved trauma
  • Experiences of domestic violence
  • Migration and resettlement challenges.

I work with clients to help them have a deeper understanding of their behaviours and to identify the unhelpful patterns that exist in their relationships. This greater awareness is often the stepping-stone to developing more helpful ways of relating with others, and building deeper connections in relationships.

My work is informed primarily by Post-Milan, Structural Family Therapy and Attachment Theory. Being a Systemic therapist means that I focus on the relational aspects of problems and reframe issues from intrapersonal to interactional and relational. I am trained in using Radical Exposure Tapping (RET), developed by Dr. Laurie MacKinnon and have successfully used this method with clients to resolve memories of disturbing events that fuel PTSD. My approach to working with trauma is also informed by the works of Dr Gabor Mate and Dr Bassel van der Kolk.

I have a special interest in working with families after migration, and during their resettlement process. I have pursued this interest by working for key resettlement services and programs and by building partnerships with resettlement services to provide couple and family therapy and therapeutic group work to clients from a refugee and humanitarian entrant background.
